The Rev. Bernie Schroeder has been named a Diocesan Canon for International Relations by the Rt. Rev. David Alvarado, Bishop of the Anglican/Episcopal Diocese of El Salvador.  The ceremony took place on July 15, 2016 at Iglesias San Juan Evangelista (Church of St. John, the Evangelist) in San Salvador.  Under Canon Law a priest’s home Bishop must also approve such an appointment in order for it to become effective.  Bishop Shannon Johnston gave that approval last June.

“Father Bernie has been a good friend to the Diocese and people of El Salvador and I am pleased that he is a Canon from our Diocese in the United States.  We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship,” Bishop Alvarado said.

In his new role he will assist Bishop Alvarado by representing the Diocese of El Salvador before the US Government and with other US Dioceses. Schroeder has made several trips to El Salvador and has served as the Liaison Officer between the Diocese of El Salvador and the Diocese of Virginia since early 2014.  Last year, he accompanied Bishop Suffragan Susan Goff, The Rev. Leslie Steffensen and The Rev. Catherine Campbell to El Salvador for the installation of Alvarado as Bishop of the Diocese.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to serve my good friend, Bishop Alvarado, and the people of his Diocese, in this important way.  My love for the people of El Salvador and my prayer for peace there is unbounded,” said Schroeder.
